Experiments in Fiction

This painting was a bit of an exercise in restraint for me. I usually do a lot more layering and marking than in this one, but I really liked the strong contrast between the warm and cool colors. I looked at it for a long time trying to determine what was needed, and it finally told me it was ready to call done.

Much Has Transpired Since

“Who has not felt at some point amazed at being confined to just one small life, which somehow happens to be one’s own?”
-Eleanor Rosch

This morning Facebook reminded me that I posted the above quote on my timeline exactly seven years ago today. In light of everything that’s happened since then, I still think these words sum up how I feel about life. Some things have happened in the last few months that have sucked all the air out of the room and made it difficult to feel like working on art is an important use of one’s precious time, but I’ve been doing it all the same and trying not to feel too guilty about it. I’ll post my new work here as I get it photographed.

As happens sometimes, just when you’re steaming along making all kinds of new work for a solo show coming up in a couple of months, life decides to throw you a curveball. I’ve been temporarily derailed from working by a huge unexpected project – I’ll just say a family can accumulate an unbelievable amount of stuff in a pretty small house over the course of 55 years – but I hope to be back to it very soon. In the meantime, I’ll post a few images of work I finished before I had to leave.

This one is part of a series I’m calling Metaphors & Mysteries. The title comes from Lakoff and his writings on metaphor. Much more about that later when I have time. Here are few details:
